Root Canals

If you have a tooth which is severely damaged or is badly infected, root canal therapy can be done to remove the infected tooth interior completely.  This therapy draws its name from the fact that the rootcanal of the tooth is cleaned out of any infection and is then filled in. An attractive crown will then be put in place to imitate the appearance of the original natural tooth.

Your tooth could need a root canal if:

– It hurts anytime you bite down on it, touch it or pushes on it
– It is sensitive to heat
– It is sensitive to cold for more than a couple of seconds
– There is swelling near the tooth
– It is discolored (regardless of whether it hurts or not)
– It is broken

To determine whether your tooth needs a root canal treatment, your dentist will often place hot or cold substances against the tooth. The purpose is to find out whether it is more or less sensitive than a normal tooth. She will examine the tissues around the suspected tooth and gently tap on the tooth to test for any further symptoms.

Root canal therapy is done under local anesthetic, so the pain will not be an issue. At Minneapolis Dental we make sure to explain the procedure fully beforehand and answer any questions or concerns you may have. We aim for close communication so that you are fully knowledgeable about and comfortable with the process.

Root canal therapy can offer relief from ongoing deterioration, pain, and infection of the tooth.  While preventive dentistry is, of course, the best solution to infection and tooth decay, when the tooth has already deteriorated greatly or has been broken severely, it can bring great peace of mind to know that there is still a treatment which can be done to arrest the decline of the tooth’s health and prevent further infection.
