Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water. When it comes into contact with the teeth, it can be absorbed by the tooth enamel and thereby increase the tooth’s resistance to forming cavities. Acid from plaque and bacteria in the mouth is how cavities form, and fluoride makes the teeth less vulnerable to this acid.
You may have seen fluoride toothpaste, mouth rinses, and other such over-the-counter products available in many drugstores. These can help prevent tooth decay. However, because fluoride can be harmful if swallowed in high doses, these products tend to have a low level of fluoride content and may not do as much as necessary for the strength and preservation of your teeth.
Fluoride treatments, done professionally by many dental practices including Minneapolis Dental, are a good way to provide your teeth with the fluoride they need to resist tooth decay and cavities to the greatest extent possible. Depending on your state of oral health, we may recommend a professional fluoride treatment from one to four times a year.
The treatment is very fast and completely painless. Foam or gel with a high fluoride content will be applied to your teeth for some minutes while you sit comfortably. Afterward, you should refrain from eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes, to allow the fluoride to be absorbed as much as possible and to help your teeth remineralize.
